A few years ago my nephew went on tour with a band called the Joshua James Band. I had never heard of them, so I looked them up and listen to a few of their songs. I've been hooked ever since. I've been trying to catch one of his shows for a while now and he finally made his way down to Dallas.
He's got a couple other bands running around with him too. He's co-headlining with Honey Honey. I was skeptical when i heard their name, but they were awesome. They've got themselves a new fan. Great night of music and photographs.

I spent several hours out on my driveway this morning. You may be thinking, "why would you do that Jared?" Well let me tell you. It keeps stinkin snowing and because I was too lazy to shovel the snow the first go around, now it took twice as long to get the job done because it was a solid sheet of ice under the new blanket of snow. Why did I not shovel the snow the first time you might ask? Well because, this is Texas. The snow tends to not stick around more than a few hours at a time. Why should this time be any different? Apparently Texas switched places with Wyoming and now we're getting their weather. Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be nice and warm. It'll melt the snow and then on Monday it's supposed to get the 20's again and snow a little more. What has the world come to. Has the universe forgotten that this is Texas? I'm blaming Egypt for this whole snow business. I don't know how they did it, but I think they did. The whole political unrest thing was just a cover. Well I hope you're happy Egypt. You totaly screwed up my morning off of work. And my back hurts. I did take some cool pictures though.

Denver Pyfers

Made the treck up to Denver over Thanksgiving. The weather was perfect. Not hot and not cold......well, a little cold. I am from Texas. If it gets below 60 I'm cold. But at least it didn't snow on us. It seems like every time we go up north it snows all over us. Playin in the snow is cool, drivin in it is not.

My friend Brandon and I took our families out to Weatherford to do some photographs. It was a lot a fun and we got some good photos in amongst all the playing around. His wife Ashley did a good job picking out the clothes they wore. It made the photographs that much more interesting. All in all, a big thumbs up for me.

I really like photographing engaged couples. The relationship is still pretty fresh. They can't keep their hands off each other and when they look at each other, you can't help but see how much they care for one another. Can't wait to shoot the wedding.

I photographed the Baker kids a few days before Halloween. I decided to steal a lighting technique I saw on a video from the Strobist website. Nothing too fancy, just a main light and four Novatron heads directly behind them. I really like the way it looks. I'll probably do it again some time down the road.

I was at a shoot today for the studio I work for. We were photographing seniors at one of the high schools. I had the Lens Baby with me, so I decided to throw that sucker on the front of my D300 and put it to work. I got some pretty killer stuff too. The first one is my favorite.

Old Park In Azle

I had a shoot out in Azle today. On my way up to the school I saw all this old playground equipment. It looked pretty cool, so I went in for a little closer look. Unfortunately the whole thing is blocked off by a big fence. I thought about letting myself in by jumping the fence, but I was in my work shirt and I didn't really want a breaking and entering charge to be brought on me while I'm workin. Those things tend to get you fired. I'd be just another casualty of the recession. Any way, I just decided to take some shots thru the fence. All in all, I got some good stuff.

There was some pretty cool storm clouds out tonight. I don't really know how to photograph lightning, but I got something half way decent anyway. I never really got a really good bolt in any of the frames. I'd change my composition and then the lighting would strike right where I was aimed at before. The lesson learned tonight is patience.

I have to admit, these images didn't turn out exactly like I wanted them to. With limited space, limited artistic skills and limited hair styling skills they turned out just OK. Harlee's so darn cute though that it doesn't really matter. The background is just some pink seamless that I used some pastel chalk and colored flowers on. Her hair is a little crooked and in her face, but it was the best I could do. I'm not Paul Mitchell you know. Anyway, these three turned out pretty cute.

Gotta love the playground. Recess never came quick enough and then it went by way too fast. The equipment they get to play on now is a whole lot better than it was when I was playing at recess. The merry-go-round was about the coolest thing we had and it was pretty dangerous. The big kids would get in the middle of it and spin it around at a speed that would impress NASA. There was always the kid who'd fly off and get hurt and then the merry-go-round was off limits for the rest of the recess. Ahhh, memories.

I love the catch lights in these two images. I took these with my 50mm 1.4. I did this set up at the school I'm photographing at this week for the studio I work for. I shot these using the ambient light from strip lights I was using. I turned my white balance to Kelvin 2600 to give it that blue tint. I thought they turned out pretty cool.

I attended an event at the zoo last night where a bunch of local restaurants give away food samples. Free food is always good and the food there was really good. It was pretty cool.

The free food was really cool, but what was even cooler was the fact that they had the Spin Doctors performing. The place was full of old people who don't know how to rock out, so the front of the stage was left pretty much vacant. I got to be right up in the action and got a lot of good photographs. Plus I went half deaf in my right ear because I was right next to a big huge speaker. Nothing's cooler than going half deaf at a concert. Anyway, here's the photos.

This is what happens when you have kids in your house. I know exactly who took the bite out of this apple and put it back like nothings wrong. Getting them to fess up is another story entirely. I'm pretty sure I'll need to get a DNA test before anyone finally comes clean with a confession. I'll call in CSI, they'll get the confession I need.

Ft. Worth Arts Festival

The Arts Festival was this weekend. This is the first year I've gotten to go and spend a decent amount of time wandering around. It's a lot of fun seeing all the art, but I really like the other forms of enterainment, especially the music. I love live music. It doesn't even have to be really good live music.

Walking down Main St. I got to listen to all kinds of music, including the guy down below with the funny looking guitar. I think he called it a guar or something. He was really good. He played traditional African music and then he busted out some Bach. Down the road a short distance there was a five piece band playing some Dixie Land. These guys were pretty entertaining. Good stuff. I had my kids with me, so I didn't get to listen to anything for very long before they got bored. "Dad, when are we going to look at other stuff? This is boring." I guess my kids would rather listen to crappy Hannah Montana, than some good o'l Dixie Land. Maybe they'll like it when they get older.

My siter-in -law is always good for some sample shootin. I've got a banquet coming up in April and this is the setup I was planning on using. I think it looks really pretty good. I hate using a "scene" to shoot in. I don't like a filling a frame full of stuff. I like minimal. Minimal is good. Grey seamless is great.

Baseball Light Painting

I got bored tonight, so I thought to myself,"what could a guy, who's a photographer do when he's bored." I came to the conclusion that I should probably photograph something. So I did photograph something and I did it in a way that I haven't photographed anything before, I light painted it. For those who don't know what that is, I'll explain. You put your camera on a tripod, put it on a long exposure, grab a flashlight, turn off the house lights and just go crazy. I don't know enough to get technical, so that's the best I can do. Anyway, here's what I got.

The first shot here reminds me of some animal coming out of a cave. I thought it was pretty cool looking. This shot I was going for the old time 1920's feel. I'm not sure I got it exactly right, but it was fairly decent too

This shot doesn't really have a story or look to it, it was just another attempt that went well. Good stuff.

Rhodes Family Portraits

I was asked to do some family portraits today. The plan was to shoot everything outside. Well of course it rained all night and all morning. It was cold too. Needless to say, it was not good shooting outside weather. The family had a really good idea though. One of their son's used to work at a Cousin's Barbecue restaurant and knew one of the managers there. He asked the guy if we could just shoot there and he said we could. It was really cool. Much better than the boring outdoors. We had about 45 min.s to get in and out, and we did it. I got some good stuff too. Most importantly though, it was a lot of fun........for me anyway. That's the only thing that matters right?

Sea World San Antonio

My family and I went to Sea World over the weekend and had really a pretty cool time. I like Sea World. You don't wait in lines, the shows are pretty cool, the exibits are really cool, and YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAND IN LINES! I was a little disappointed with the Shamu show because they were't able to get into the water with the wales. It made the show pretty lame, but the other shows were really good.

Most of the photos I got were mostly family stuff, so there isn't a ton to post here. I did however get this shot of some jelly fish. It cracks me up to see people snapping off shot after shot with there point and shoots, flashes just a blazin away. Lookin down after every shot and saying,"I keep getting this big bright light in the shot." Anyone who does this, let me drop some knowledge on you. If you use flash on glass, you will get a big bright reflection back from the glass. Your image will not be good and you'll forver take pictures that don't turn out. You'll stand there trying to explain to all your friends exactly what they're looking at and they'll all give you that awkward courtesy smile and think to themselves,"when will this guy learn from Jared and not use flash in front of glass." The world may never know.

I know I just posted images that look like this a few posts back, but I just got my new 50mm 1.4 lense and I had to shoot with it. It's got an extremely shallow depth of field that looks cool. I love the way the images look at f1.4. So good. Those images shot at 1.8 are nothin. These are the real deal.

Basketball Breil Style

Breil started playing basketball this year. I took a few shot of him in his jersey and they turned out good. So now they're on display for one and all to see.
I shot these in my living room (as always) with an SB800 and some black foil for a snoot. I shot it with a lense baby. That's why it's all distorted looking. I think it's a cool look, but not everyone does. I showed my wife and her response was, "they're cool, but why are they all blurry?"

I borrowed a lense form work today(50mm 1.8). Shot these with my D300. These were my favorites. The first one was shot in camera in sepia. These new cameras do a good job with sepia and black and white. The black and white shot I converted in photoshop. It turned out pretty cool too though. Everyone of these was shot at 1.8. I wanted the shallowest depth of field I could get. Over all, I think they turned out really quite good.

I did some photographs of my Dad over the holidays. Most people would make their dad dress up. Put on a suit, or a least a nice shirt. Not me. That's not my Dad. He wears whatever it is he's got on for his portraits. I like it better that way. It's more real. As you can see from the last two images, he doesn't take things too seriously. That's my Dad.

It's the middle of December, so it makes total sense for my kids to be out on the trampoline, acting like its 80 degrees outside. Oh wait, we're in Texas. It is 80 degrees outside. For two days its been really nice outsideside. I love it. This is why I left Montana. Now tommorrow it'll be back in the 30's, but I had two days of good December heat. Texas is great.

This first shot you can see my human light stand to the left of the picture. I had Ella holding my flash for me. I don't know why I didn't crop her hand out, but I just liked the way it looked.

I posted this shot because Harlee's doing her model face and it looked pretty cute.

There's a lot going on in this post and I'm going to explain why. The other day I was out in Azle doing a sports shoot for the studio I work for. On my way to the school I noticed an old worn down fireworks stand that was pretty interesting looking. I thought to myself, "when I'm done shooting sports I'm going to get a few shots of this building." Seems simple enough right? Oh no my friend, it is not simple enough. I went back to the building as I had planned. I parked at the gas station across the street from the building and started over to the stand. I was half way to my destination when I notice a guy staring at me with menace in his eyes. I looked over at him and gave him the head bob what's up and said,"how's it going man?" To which he replies,"gonna takes some pictures huh?" in a thick country accent. I said,"ya man, that's the plan." He says,"what do you plan on photographin?" I say,"the old building right there." Now he gets all tough and says,"I don't think you should be photographin buildings you ain't got permission to photograph at." I get equally as tough and say,"well that's what I'm going to do." I guess he didn't have any more zingers to throw my way, so he goes into the gas station and I go and photograph the building. More out of spite than inspiration at this point. I noticed after a while that he came back out, but I didn't look his way and defiantly photographed away. He got into his truck rolled down his window and on his way out of the gas station parking lot he yelled,"hey man, you plannin on buyin a flower shop?" All I could do was turn and stare at him as he drove away. I had nothing to come back with. I had been bested.......sort of. Anyway, here's some of the pictures I captured.

Full of Hot Air

On Saturday I was on the way to my house after picking up my babysitter, when I noticed a huge hot air balloon in a vacant lot. They were about half way done filling up when I drove by, but I couldn't stop because I had to get to work. After I dropped off the kids and the babysitter I ran out the door to see if they were still on the ground, but they weren't. I did get a couple interesting shots anyway though.
This first shot reminds me of a flower. A big flower made of synthetic material and it flies. Cool.

Harlee The Clown Outtakes

This first image is a quick glance into my makeup putting on skills. I was going to paint up Harlee's face to look like a clown for her shoot, but as you can see, I pretty much suck. Every time I look at this picture I crack up because it looks so horrible, but she's just so happy to be covered in that stuff. I think Hollywood will be calling me any day now to start my promising career as a makeup artist.

This next shot was a lighting test, but it turned out really pretty cute.

Harlee The Clown

I photographed my youngest daughter today. I had the idea for these photographs a while ago, but I just now got the time to do them. I wanted them to look like they were taken in a circus tent, so I put up some blue seamless and threw down some hay, then called it good. I wanted to paint Harlee's face to really pull it all together, but that didn't really happen and you'll see why in my next post. Any way, these are a few of my favorites from the shoot.

Webelos Activity

I'm one of the leaders of a cub scout group and tonight we had an activity. We were running around out in the weeds looking for different kinds of animals and bugs. I didn't bring my long lense with me, so I didn't get anything too cool of the wildlife. As you know, when you get too near an animal, it runs away. This happened pretty much everytime I went to photograph anything that moved. I did get a shot of a cottontail, but it was kind of lame. The other shots were pretty good though.

Ella's a 1st Grader

Ella starts the 1st grade on Tuesday, so my wife thought it would be a good idea to get some photos to show this time in her life. I didn't have anything better to do, so off we went. The first image on the railroad tracks was kind of intersting. Apparently it's illegal to photograph on the tracks. It makes sense, but I didn't know. Well we hadn't been there for more than five minutes when a cop rolled up and chewed me out for being a big dip weed. To any one who reads this, DON'T PHOTOGRAPH ON THE STINKIN RAILROAD TRACKS OR YOU'LL BE SHOT BY THE FIRST COP WHO COMES YOUR WAY!!!!! At least that's what the cop made me feel like. Anyway, here they are. The color on these images are really muted for some reason. On my computer they look nice and rich in color, but every time I up load them they get all drab lookin. When you look, imagine rich saturated colors.

We attended church today in our new building. It's great, we live about three blocks down the road from it.
At about 7:30 tonight it rained pretty good and after the rain goes away, the sky usually looks pretty cool. I ran and got my camera and took this shot. I thought it turned out pretty good.

I was watching the default slide show on my computer one day and a few photographs from this wedding popped up and they looked pretty good, so I decided to post them. I don't know why I hadn't before.

This first one is a sequence of shots taken of the ring bearer. He was having a great time throwing the flowers as the bride and groom came thru the line, then it was all done. I walked up to him and told him he should throw some more. These are the shots I got.

These are just a few portraits I got of the bride and groom before the ceremony. Nothing earth shattering, but really pretty good.

I decided to photograph my kids today. My youngest wouldn't cooperate, so she doesn't get any images of her posted. Hopefully she'll learn from her mistakes this morning and be a better person because of it. Probably not. I imagine she'll continue being an almost 2 year old with a bad attitude towards getting her photo taken. I imagine she'll get over it just like the rest of them did.
Here's Ella's best shot. I made her walk around down in the mud to get this shot. It's been raining like crazy and this shot was taken right by a creek. I hope she has no leeches on her.

It was all Breil could do to hold the skateboard like that on his shoulders. He kept saying,"it's too heavy dad." To which I responded,"Well, then you'd better get tougher." I'm the best dad a kid could want.

These last 2 photos I took in my living room. I put up some seamless, but I couldn't get the look I was going for. My living room is just too darn small. I did get these photos of Breil while I was doing some test shots. They remind me of being in a circus tent.

Family Photos

I ventured out to Krum yesterday. Well, kind of by Krum. I was out in the middle of nowhere really. County roads with more dust than a desert. It looked like a snow storm had hit or something. Anyway, I did some photos out there.
For some reason the saturation on these is really bad. They look great in Photoshop and then I post them and they're all dull an not colorful at all. Oh well, the sun will come out tommorrow.

Break Dancing

Mineral Wells once again.

I was sent out to Mineral Wells again today. This, of course, meant I needed to stop by the old Baker Hotel and do some more photos. I tried to put a more vintage look to all of them. Just to put a little different spin on the images this time around.
You'll notice this chair floating from image to image. I found it in a area of the hotel I wasn't supposed to be. I of course took it from that area and moved it to several other areas. It was a cool chair and it made the images more interesting.

My buddy Brandon and I had a shoot together in Mineral Wells today. We had a bit of down time in the morning, so we decided to pick up our cameras and hit the town. When ever you photograph in a small town, your bound to come across some cool stuff and boy did we. They've got this cool old run down hotel that hasn't been operating in who knows how long. I need to get back there with a model and do some cool photographs.

Tonight I was shooting an auction with my buddy Brandon. Inside the hotel was this cool hallway. I took a look at it and decided I needed my photograph taken with the hall as the backdrop. Brandon took it, and it turned out really pretty good and I'm just vain enough to post it on my blog.

New Wedding

Wedding day has come again. This last wedding was really pretty cool. They got married in a fur and leather boutique that the groom manages. It was a great spot for a wedding.

Today I was out in my backyard putting together my kids jungle gym. Ella was off to my right messing around with one of the poles. All of the sudden I started hearing a loud screeching noise and Ella starts screaming and running away. I didn't know what exactly was going on, so I went and investigated. Apparently Ella had dropped the pole right into a rabbits hole that had 4 baby bunnies sleeping in it. The pole hit a couple of them and made them scream, hence the weird screeching noise I heard. At first I thought they were just a bunch of rats, so I was glad to see after further investigation that they were indeed bunnies. I of course pulled them out of there hole and totally stressed them out so I could get a picture. They sure are cute little buggers.

Multi-imaging

I was traving home from Amarillo a few weeks back and I came across one of the places I'd photographed earlier. When I was there earlier, it was really dark outside and the images didn't really turn out all that good. The lighting conditions weren't great this day either, but they were alright. Anyway, I took a bunch of images in a 360 degree circle. I threw four of them together and made this panoramic. I didn't take the time to make it look seamless, but I made it none the less. Think of it as not good abstract art.

Breil's Amarillo Birthday Party

Breil got an early birthday party. My family won't be in Amarillo a whole lot longer, so we threw him a party so he could hang out with his Amarillo buddies before he moves. It was a lot of fun. Breil had a blast and he got some cool gifts too. Here are some photos from the event.

What the mud!?

The other night I was driving here to Ft. Worth. I was driving over a bridge just as the sun had set behind the horizon. The lighting was perfect and the reflection in the water was really cool. Unfortunately I was on a bridge and couldn't just stop. I drove to the end of the bridge and ran back to the spot. I didn't realize it when I started running, but it was probably about a 1/2 mile to get back to the spot I had seen earlier. Then when I get there, I found that the whole place is nothing but mud and water. By the time I'd gotten there and got good and muddy, my awsome light had gone away. I did get a couple half way decent shots anyway though. Maybe next time. My shoes are still covered in mud.

New Reflector

The other day some co-workers and I were cleaning out a storage unit and we came across this cool reflector we used to use. We don't ever use it in the studio anymore, so it was going to get tossed. Well I am a photo equipment savior and I straight took it home and put it to work. I got my sister-in-law to sit down and do some cool photographs with it.

"The Towns In Between"

I've just started a new project. I'm calling it, "The Towns In Between." I drive back and forth between Amarillo and Ft. Worth all the time. In between, are all these tiny little towns that time forgot. I figured, if I'm driving by them anyway, why not photograph um? So now I am. I started yesterday on my way here to Amarillo. I've posted a few of my starter photos. I got some pretty good stuff. I'm going to continue getting as many photos as I can. Maybe by the end of it, I'll put a book together. Who knows? The first set here is of just landscapes. They're pretty cool.

I know it seems like I fell off the face of the blogging earth, but I haven't. I've been really stinkin busy and have had no time to put anything on here. I have, however, had a little time on my way to a few shoots to take a couple landscapes that I thought looked pretty interesting. They arn't super great, but they're the best I've had time to capture. Here's one of them. It was taken out in a little town north of Ft. Worth called Justin.

Harlee turned 1

Harlee's a big one year old now. She turned one yesterday. We celebrated last week though. We had Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Katie, and good buddy David in town. It was a lot of fun.
This is Breil getting chewed out for touching Harlee's new phone. "back off big brother before I bite your fingers off with my 4 teeth." It never fails. Put cake in front of a kid and it's going to get messy. As you can see, Harlee is almost putting out her own eye because she's cramming it in so quick.
. Now the post cake eating hose down. In to the tub and spray her down.

Lots and lots of coins

The other day I had a lady e-mail me about photographing some coins for her. When I signed on to do the job, I figured there wouldn't be a ton a coins to photograph, but boy was I wrong. I had about 300 coins to photograph. Front and back. I didn't have a really good set up to do the job with either. I put the coins on the ground and stood on a chair and shot straight down. I got up and down off of that chair about 600 times. Now you'd think to yourself, "so what wimp." Well for the last two days, my legs have been killing me. You don't realize how out of shape you are until you exert yourself a little bit and your sore for the next two days. I guess I need to lay off the soda and start lifting some weights.

Ella's First Day

Ella had her first day of Kindergarden today. It's wierd how fast time goes by. Pretty soon we'll be sending Breil out the door to his first day of Pre-K. Then it'll be just me and Harlee. Fun stuff.

Here's some more photos from Nauvoo. The first photo is of the whole Burton clan......well, almost all of them. Some of the grandkids couldn't make it, but it was still quite a crew. All the granddaughters were able to come, so they did a photo with Pappa. How stinkin cute is this shot.

Nauvoo Illinois

My Grandparents-in-law just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They had the whole family treck out to Nauvoo Illinois for a little fun and relaxation. I took a lot of photographs, but I'm limited on space per entry, so I'm doing it in sections. The first entry here is just some of the scenery. As you may have noticed, 3 of the 5 photographs are of corn. That is due to the fact that corn is everywhere up there. One corn field after another man. This is at the banks of the Mississippi River. It was really beautiful up there.

I was sitting around bored and I thought to myself, "hey, I'm a photographer. Why don't I photograph something." Well here is the results of being bored. Not the coolest of photographs, but they're not too bad. I just threw my kids in front of our living room door and said, " do whatever you want." Well what's a kid going to do with and opportunity like that thown his way. He's going to act like a complete goof. This is definately my kid.

New Wedding

I'm trying a little somthing different here. I'm going to start putting these overlays on my photographs. I don't have any specific reason for it, I just think it looks cool. Plus it puts my logo on every photo. My favorite photograph is the third one down. It's pretty stinkin cool. I put the windmill one in there because it's just a cool shot of the windmill out on the location. Now I know your thinking, "Dude. All you do is photograph windmills." But I'm telling you, both weddings I've done recently had windmills on the property and some cool sky to use as a backdrop, so I went for it. Hopefully the next location will have like a cool stuffed bear or something. Maybe even a live one. That would be way cool. I said cool way too much in this post. COOL!!!
